APPS FOR LEARNING
LANGUAGES
In the app of the week section, every week an application will be published which aims to help you learn vocabulary fun and easily.
HELLO TALK
This application is mainly communicative since you have the chance to talk with people from other countries through a personal or a group chat, you decide what is better for you. In this chat you can talk to native-speaking language partners through voice mails, pictures, emojis, videos, recordings, video calls, handwritten messages and send gifts which will let them use the app as VIP members. This also has a section similar to the social networks you use regularly in which you can post things you do on a daily basis using the foreign language you are learning. Because of the above, you have a profile with your picture, the number of times you have used the available tools, a short presentation in your native and target language, your posts, your age and your gender.
There are more than 100 languages available for you to learn, it does not matter if you are interested in learning or practicing a non-Roman-based language this app has a tool to handle it. You can write in your Roman character-based language and the tool named transliteration helps you to translate it into your target language (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, among others).
There were a couple of things I did not like about this application:
-
The first was the difficulty to find people to talk and practice with, even though there is a section for you to find people who are learning your native language and speak your target language. Keep in mind that since it has a chat, you will come across with people who are using the app with another purposes.
-
The second main issue I found was the time it took to contact other users, however, as soon as you find people who are interested in practicing you will be using the app more frequently.
-
The third was the internet connection, it has to be good otherwise the app will not work, you will not be able to talk, to search, to use the voice-to-text or the text-to-voice tools. The last thing I did not like about it was that with the free version you can learn and practice only one language at a time, if you want to practice more than one, you have to pay for it.
I recommend you this application because you will be able to practice your target language with native speakers who will tell you if you sound natural or not, if your grammar is good, some of them will give you tips to improve, recommend you websites or talk to you continuously which will help you practice and improve.
Target audience: Intermediate and advanced learners.
Type of activities: Speaking
Available: App Store and Google play.
You can ask questions related to specific vocabulary, phrases or expressions you are not sure about. You can also ask if what you say sounds natural or not. There is another option in which you can ask people to give you examples of a word, a phrase or a situation. There is also the possibility to ask for translation of a sentence, word, phrase, in other words what you want to know. If while you’re using the app, you are not sure about the difference between two words or one word with different possible uses, there is also a section dedicated to it. However, if you are not interested in learning vocabulary but about a region or a specific culture you can also customize it to meet that purpose. But if what you want to ask does not fit in any of these categories you can use the last section, free question. This app is really good, I recommend you to use it if you are learning English, it is useful for learners of different levels. Something I did not like about the app is that if you ask for vocabulary related to a specific field, for instance mechanics, you will hardly be answered, the time in which your question is solved depends on the type of question, and on the users. Keep in mind that you are an active user so try to help other users to solve their doubts, that is why you are asked to select your native language and other languages or region you know about.
Target audience:
Beginners, pre-intermediate, Intermediate, and advanced learners.
Type of activities:
In this application you can exercise your writing, speaking and vocabulary since you have the opportunity to ask questions to native speakers of your target language.
Available: App Store and Google play.
How to Speak Real English
This application makes use of video lessons; therefore, the activities are based mainly in listening, reading and speaking because you as user have to repeat, imitate, and read what the tutor is teaching you. The order of the content is first you get to know the vocabulary, then you practice and finally, you are tested to check if you learned and understood not only the vocabulary but also the grammar of the unit. This is an eight-lesson course then, you will be able to complete all the activities in a month and a half if you do one task per day but, if you have more time to complete one unit per day you can finish it in less than two weeks. I recommend this app because the content is very good, you have subtitles in English in case you don’t get the idea of the video lessons, the pronunciation of the tutor is clear, the vocabulary is not too difficult then you will find easy to understand the video lessons even though you do not know a lot of grammar and vocabulary. Regarding the negative aspects, I would name two things; one is that, there is too much advertisement, it appears constantly when you are using the application even when you are doing a task and want to go back to the main menu; the other thing is the time given to answer the tests, it is too short for beginners but for intermediate learners it is enough so, if you are starting to learn English you will find it a little bit challenging.
Target audience: Beginners and Intermediate learners
Type of activities: listening, reading and speaking
Available: App Store and Google play.
Memrise
This app has more than 100 courses to learn English, in this two-week period I made use of Advanced English (C1, C2). The activities of this course are based mainly in vocabulary, the goal is to learn 1.790 words throughout the course. The words are first shown with their definition and later the user has to answer multiple selection questions, which consist of identifying the definition of the given word or the opposite, find the word corresponding to the given definition. The vocabulary implemented in this section of the app is not difficult for which I consider it can also be used by intermediate learners. Another thing I liked about this app is that, it shows you your progress and how much of the course have you done. I would recommend you to use this section of Memrise if you are interested in learning vocabulary.
Target audience: Elementary, intermediate and advanced learners.
Type of activities: Vocabulary
Available: App Store and Google play.
