LISTENING

Listening to Academic Lectures Online

This is an incredibly intelligent way to get ready for and get familiar with long and complex lectures in English at your college or any other academic context.

If you intend to handle spoken information in academic contexts such as college seminars and lectures you should get familiar with this kind of information before. Lectures are a common way of instruction for most university courses and even though, the length and complexity can vary depending on the subject and the level of education, certain listening skills are required.

TIPS

Here are some tips we can give you to get ready for academic lectures in colleges and other similar contexts:

# 1

Use a bottom-up thinking to process information: connecting background knowledge before listening, predicting, note-taking, assessing what you've learned.

# 2

Lectures always have a purpose and usually address a topic already familiar or relevant, try to identify the purpose and remember all knowledge you have about the topic.

# 3

Use handouts with specific and general information to be gathered while listening. Include comprehension questions and vocabulary.

# 4

Include a set of critical thinking questions to be answered after you listen to the whole lectured.

# 5

Note taking is essential for initial listening: mind maps, lists of unknown terms, drawings and highlighting scripts are ways to collect key information.
